Short answer: Kartalkaya is about 265-290 km from Istanbul by car; without traffic the drive takes about three hours. You take the motorway to Bolu and climb roughly 30 km of mountain road from the city centre. The hotels area sits at about 1,850-2,000 m and the slopes reach around 2,200 m. The season usually opens in early December.
The distance depends on where in Istanbul you start. The times below assume no traffic; weekend departures and snowy days take longer.
| Starting point | Distance | Time (no traffic) |
|---|---|---|
| Sabiha Gökçen Airport | about 265 km | about 3 hours |
| Kadıköy | about 285 km | about 3 h 15 min |
| Taksim | about 290 km | about 3 h 20 min |
| Bolu city centre | about 30 km | about 40 min |
From Istanbul you follow the motorway towards Ankara; after Düzce and the Bolu mountain pass you take the Bolu exit. From the city centre you join the Kartalkaya road and climb roughly 30 km through forest to the hotels area. This final climb is the demanding part; the motorway section is straightforward.
If you are staying in the area, it is easy to extend the trip: Lake Abant is about 75 km from Kartalkaya by car, and we cover the route and park entry in our Abant guide.
Winter tyres are not mandatory for passenger cars nationwide; the requirement applies to commercial vehicles carrying passengers or freight between cities. That said, governorships can add their own rules, and in Bolu winter tyres and chains are checked during the winter months. It is best to look at the Bolu Governorship's announcement for the season before you set off.
At Otofilorent you can add winter tyres to your rental as an extra; the price is listed on the extras page. We cover snowy mountain driving in more detail in our Kartepe winter guide.
Most of the route is motorway; the difference shows on the final 30 km climb. SUVs and crossovers with more ground clearance and a higher driving position handle snowy ramps more comfortably. If you are travelling with ski gear, luggage space matters too. See the options in our fleet on the cars page.
A note: an SUV look does not mean four-wheel drive. On snow, the real difference comes from the tyres and careful driving.
The season usually opens in early December and runs to the end of March, with January and February the busiest. Opening depends on snowfall, so check the ski centre's announcements before you travel. Weekdays are quieter both on the slopes and on the road.
Accommodation is concentrated in the hotels area and fills up early at weekends during the ski season. If you are driving, staying in Bolu and heading up in the morning also works — just remember you will drive the mountain road twice a day, and snowfall can stretch the journey.
You can pick up your car from one of our 18 points in Istanbul. For Kartalkaya, starting from the Asian side shortens the drive; for example, Sabiha Gökçen Airport is about 265 km from Kartalkaya. Around 30 km from the city centre, about 40 minutes on the mountain road. That climb is the demanding part of the trip.
Chains may be needed on the mountain road in heavy snow, and winter tyres or chains can be asked for at checkpoints. Check road conditions before you leave, and call us before your rental about using chains.
Not nationwide; the requirement applies to commercial vehicles. Governorships may add their own rules, and in Bolu winter tyres and chains are checked during the winter months.
