Can you rent a car with a new driving licence? Licences under 1 year, 6 months and temporary licences

Can you rent a car with a new driving licence? Licences under 1 year, 6 months and temporary licences

Short answer: To rent a car from Otofilorent you must be at least 21 years old and have held a category B driving licence for at least 1 year. If your licence is less than 1 year old, including a 6-month licence, you cannot rent a car. As soon as it reaches 1 year, you can rent many economy cars; higher classes require more years of driving.

Can you rent a car with a licence under 1 year?

No. Our rental conditions require a category B driving licence held for at least 1 year, and this applies to every car. Before booking, check the date shown next to category B on your licence; at least 1 year must have passed since that date on the rental day. If you have renewed your licence or are unsure, ask our central line.

Can you rent a car with a 6-month licence?

No. A 6-month licence does not meet the 1-year requirement. You need to wait until your licence is 1 year old; the same rule applies to additional drivers.

Renting with a temporary licence

Please ask our central line on 0850 305 00 45 before booking whether a rental is possible with a temporary driving licence. Please bring your driving licence with you at handover.

Which cars can you rent with a 1-year licence?

Each car's age and licence requirement is shown on its car card. The cars below can be rented at 21 with a 1-year licence:

Car Gearbox
Fiat Egea Manual
Citroen C3 Manual
Renault Clio Automatic
Hyundai i20 Automatic
Dacia Sandero Automatic
Renault Kangoo Automatic

The Renault Taliant, Dacia Stepway, Fiat Fiorino and Ford Courier can also be rented on the same terms. All cars and their requirements are on our rental cars page; the requirement is also shown on the car card on the booking screen.

What about higher classes?

Intermediate and upper-class cars require a higher age and more years of driving. The exact requirement is shown on each car's page and on its car card in the "Minimum" line; check it there before booking.

Do the same rules apply to additional drivers?

Yes. If someone other than the renter will drive, the additional driver's licence details are added to the rental agreement and the same age and licence requirements apply. If someone not named in the agreement drives the car, the cover becomes void.
