Company cars: rent, lease or buy?

Company cars: rent, lease or buy?

Short answer: there are three routes to a company car, and the real difference between them is ownership. With operational rental the car stays with the rental company; you pay a monthly fee and return it at the end. With financial leasing the aim is financing; at the end of the contract the car passes to you or you get the right to buy it. When you buy, the car belongs to your company from day one. If you want to keep capital in the business and keep monthly costs predictable, rental stands out; if you want to own the car over time, leasing; if you will keep it for many years, buying.

What is the core difference between the three routes?

The difference starts with who owns the car and what happens at the end:

  • Operational rental: ownership stays with the rental company. Your company pays for the right to use the car and returns it at the end; acquiring ownership is not the aim.
  • Financial leasing: a financing method governed in Turkey by Law No. 6361 on Financial Leasing, Factoring, Financing and Savings Financing Companies. The leasing company buys the car, you use it and pay during the contract, and at the end ownership passes to you or you have the right to buy it.
  • Buying: the car is your company's asset from the start; all of the cost and risk is yours.

We explain how fleet, corporate and company car rental differ on our fleet rental page. This article is not about those terms but about the decision to own or use.

Which items should you compare?

When deciding, look beyond the monthly amount at who takes on what:

Item Operational rental Financial leasing Buying
Cash tied up at the start No down payment Depends on the contract The price of the car or a loan down payment
Ownership of the car The rental company The leasing company during the term, may pass to you at the end Your company from the start
Depreciation and resale risk Not yours Yours if the car passes to you Yours
Maintenance, tyres and breakdowns The rental company Usually yours; check the contract Yours
The car at the end Returned Taken over, or the purchase right is used Stays with you
Adding more cars By requesting additional cars Usually a new contract A new purchase

Who is operational rental right for?

Companies that would rather put capital into the business than into cars, that want to know their monthly costs up front, and that do not want to deal with maintenance, tyres and breakdowns. For companies whose vehicle needs change over time — field teams, fixed-term projects, growing sales teams — flexibility is a further advantage.

At Otofilorent corporate rental starts from a single car; terms of 1 month, 3 months, 1 year and 2 years are available, and the rental is invoiced to your company. Details are on our corporate rental page.

Who is financial leasing right for?

It is a financing route for companies that see the car as a long-term company asset but do not want to pay for it in one go. Once the car passes to the company, depreciation and any later sale are your concern again. Leasing is a service offered by financial leasing companies and should not be confused with operational rental from a car rental company.

When does buying make sense?

Buying can make sense for companies that plan to use the car for many years, have the cash, and can handle maintenance, insurance and tyres in-house. In return, a down payment or the full price is tied up, and depreciation and loss of value on resale stay with the company.

How do tax and accounting affect the decision?

Expensing the rental fee, depreciation and VAT depend on the company's structure and current legislation, so the same car can lead to different results at two companies. Make the decision together with your accountant. At Otofilorent the rental is invoiced to your company and can be recorded as an expense.

What should you ask before deciding?

  • How many years do we plan to use the car?
  • Do we want to tie cash up in cars or invest it in the business?
  • Who will keep track of maintenance, tyres and breakdowns?
  • Will our need for cars grow or shrink in the coming period?
  • Does it matter that the car stays with us at the end?
